[H4] Therapeutic Approaches to Breast Cancer Related Soft Tissue Dysfunction

Jodi Winicour, PT, CMT, CLT-LANA

Despite the fact that over 211,000 cases of invasive breast cancer and more than 58,000 cases of in situ breast cancers were diagnosed in 2005, information regarding therapeutic treatments for this specific patient population is scarce. This workshop will focus on common problems faced by individuals recovering from breast cancer treatments including axillary web syndrome, scapular dysfunction, and upper quadrant soft tissue hypomobility. Special attention will also be given to the early identification of malignant lymphedema and bony metastases for therapists treating patients with a history of breast cancer. The session format will combine lecture with case examples and digital video.

Topics of Discussion will include:

  1. An overview of Evidence Based Practice.
  2. A discussion of current surgical and radiological options for the treatment of breast cancer.
  3. A thorough description of axillary web syndrome (AWS), with and without upper extremity lymphedema, including proposed etiology, treatment, and a review of the current literature.
  4. An introduction to the evaluation and treatment of scapular and soft tissue dysfunction of the upper quarter following breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy.
  5. Common yet concerning signs and symptoms of malignant lymphedema and bony metastases in patients with a history of breast cancer.
